I’ve recently come to the conclusion that my idea for a piece of custom software would actually be easier to implement as an entire operating system. It will be used by only a few machines in my company, and a few clients. I intend to keep it closed-source.

What are your thoughts on having a custom operating system (based on the linux kernel) developed by one of the custom software development services available?

I need to be able to update (patch) the kernel regularly, and I don’t want to keep paying this company to do custom updates. Can I use standard kernel updates? Are they distro-independent?

I just want your thoughts. If you have a better idea, then that’s good too. But there are so many features for my product that I’m fairly certain I need my own distro.

Thanks
