Links are what seem to make the internet go â??round and they certainly make it quick and easy to get from one page to another, or follow up on some background information on offer. However, when it comes to optimising your website and ranking well with major search engines like Google you will benefit from knowing as much as possible about the different links you can incorporate into your websiteâ??s design, and what each one can achieve.

The two main types of links your website should have to ensure its search engine optimisation, are one way links and reciprocal links.

One way links are exactly what they sound like, a link which is only a one way street, but the direction of that linking street is what is important to your websiteâ??s optimisation success, when all roads lead to your site. While one way links seem to be going against the grain of the interconnected nature of the internet, this sort of link building can actually be highly beneficial if you can achieve it in the first place.

However, the reason why one way links are so beneficial is actually the same reason they can be so hard to secure â?? having one way links, coming into your website means that your site is somewhere worth being, and therefore somewhere worth linking to. This is what search engines like to see as they only want to rank sites well which will be helpful to their searchers and if numerous other web users have deemed your site useful enough to link to, then the search engine gives this a lot of weight when determining your ranking.

To achieve one way links to your website though, you have to put in the hard work as there are no shortcuts to make users think your website is useful and informative when it isnâ??t. But itâ??s not impossible, as a dedicated SEO expert should be able to help your website reap the benefits of one way links.

Reciprocal links to your website however, are those which you actively seek from other websites, in return for your site linking back to theirs too. In reciprocating links to and from your own website, you are actively choosing to be associated with these other sites. This is why reciprocal links can actually sometimes do more harm than good to your site, because quality â?? as always â?? is more important than quantity.

This means that the websites you reciprocate links with must be relevant to your own website, company, business and online presence as while linking between sites is seen as a good thing by most search engines, this is only true if it is helpful to your website visitors. Reciprocating links with websites similar to your own will mean that the sites you link to will be just as helpful and relevant to your visitors as your own site, therefore in recommending your site to search engine users by awarding it a high ranking, the search engine knows there is plenty of useful, helpful and relevant information there for its searchers.

Building links into, and into and out of your website can help you move steadily up the most popular search engine rankings for your keywords. However, if overused or used incorrectly, link building can actually have the opposite effect, so now that you know the benefits of increasing your link popularity, seek out expert SEO advice on how to make links work for your site.

I currently have a website with GoDaddy.com. They have their own website creator program. I would like to make changes to some of the file names and file content to improve the search engine optimization of my website. I am a little confused now how I can do that with GoDaddy or any other hosted website provider…should I get Dreamweaver? Which FTP server do I need to connect to…I would appreciate if you could guide me in the right direction! Thanks.
I am basically looking for ways to FTP the files…do I need to download an FTP client?

Less is more

Go to any well known search engine, search for search engine optimisation services and you will find a plethora of internet marketing companies who list what they will do to get your companies website listed online. But do you really need to pay for all of these services? Or are some of them just listed to make the service seem better value for money? Is this a case of quantity over quality?

One of the services that they offer is “Submission to major search engines”.  I don’t think this is necessary and I actually think it is better to simply submit a sitemap and let the search engines find you naturally. Ironically if you just submit an XML sitemap, websites seem to get listed more quickly. Try it yourself if you don’t believe me, register and host two domains submit the first one to major search engines and submit a sitemap, but just submit a sitemap for the second website. The second website appears to get listed more quickly.

So what does this mean for us? I personally agree that there is no need and, indeed, a negative effect in submitting websites to search engines so advise people against it. So next time you see “Search Engine Submission” on a SEO company’s website ask yourself “Do I really need to pay extra for this service” and “Do hey really know what they’re doing”.

How to choose a Search Engine Optimisation company

Do your research before you choose a SEO company then you know what you’re getting is a great service. A good search engine optimiser should be able to justify everything they do to your website. Get to know the differences between Whitehat and Blackhat techniques. Afterall, you will be ultimately responsible as it is your website and a company that does not play by the rules could get your website banned.

Applying Pareto’s 80/20 rule could also be useful here. Try to visualise your website marketing project in terms of priority tasks. For example:

Search engines give priority to keywords, descriptions, image alt tags and content. So make sure these are right first. Never optimise just for search engines, make sure your website content is relevant to your audience. Afterall, you don’t want a website that ranks highly but no-one sticks around for long on once they find it. Search engines look for website backlinks. So submit to (relevant directories). Do not trust a search optimisation company that says it submits your website to all directories. You don’t want your Traditional Signwriting website listed on the Yorkshire Food Guide directory. Your website should be submitted to relevant directories only. Any company that submits to all to being lazy using batch processes to save time. Monitor your results – any search marketing company that claims to get quick results, yesterday is being dishonest. It is impossible. Real SEO takes time, patience and constant tweaking.  The search engines change regurlarly.  Getting ranked on Google requires a constant effort and staying there is even more difficult. Your competitors have similar ideas to you and are doing all they can to beat you. So be persistent

So you’ve got your website but it isn’t doing very well in the search listing. Do a bit of research, gather some questions together for the search engine optimisation company and climb the search engine rankings.

How do I optimize my web page so that it shows up on Yahoo! and Google search results pages? How does Search Engine Optimization (SEO) work, and what do I need to do to my web page? Thanks!

It is well known that some search engine optimisation techniques are unethical. These have been described as â??black hatâ?? methods. Is it therefore the case that SEO firms face profound ethical dilemmas when devising strategies for their clients?

Since the term â??search engine optimisationâ?? emerged in the late 1990s, there has been the possibility of a conflict of interest between the major search engines and SEO firms. The history shows that some SEO firms were guilty of stuffing content with (sometimes inappropriate) keywords to exert upward pressure on their clientsâ?? rankings. Inappropriate keywords hampered the performance of the search engines and detracted from the service that they offered to users. Given competition between search engines, they were compelled to act. They developed more complicated algorithms on which to base their ranking systems. This level of sophistication was harder for unethical actors to get around, but the potential commercial rewards prevented them from giving up. Unethical practices such as link purchasing and the creation of â??link farmsâ?? were pursued by unscrupulous firms. However, the search engines responded with new measures to combat this activity.

Accessible websites with fresh, relevant content are what users want to be featured at the top of the rankings. Companies that have tried to frustrate this ambition via unethical methods have sometimes been harshly penalised. A classic example was the firm Traffic Power who managed to get some of their client websites banned from Googleâ??s search results. Although some unethical behaviour may â??get through the net,â?? the potential consequence if it is discovered is a powerful deterrent.

It should be remembered that there is more to SEO than getting in the top ten rankings of a major search engine- there is also reputation management and other factors. At SEO Consult, we face no ethical dilemmas because we use white hat techniques to please our clients, their customers and the search engines.

I want the site to do well in organic searches, which usually entails a unique page for each part, and links between parts, yet I don’t want the site to load a new Flash swf each time the user goes to a new section of the site.

(FYI, the site consists of about 8 pages only.)

Thanks so much!

Search engine optimisation is a process which improves the quality or volume of traffic to a website from search engines. For a website, higher the search rankings, more it has the chance to get clicked. When somebody searches for a related keyword to a website then the website which comes higher in the search rankings, get the most preference. Therefore, higher search engine rankings are required to get a good volume of traffic to the website. To get this, there are many search engine optimisation techniques which help to get a better search engine ranking. Search engine optimisation has a good number of techniques which are helpful to make a web page rank in search engine results. Such techniques include:

1. On-page optimisation

Head section

Title Tag

Here the title tag is not visible to the readers but to the search engine spiders. This is because these title tags appear before the body tag and are included within the head tag. It is one of the most important tags and the main keywords for which the webpage is optimized should be used here. But don’t use all the keywords in this single tag only.

Description Tag

Another important meta tag is the description tag. Search engines use this tag as a description part of the listing. Here too the main keywords should be used. Try to make the description interesting so that users will want to click on the links.

Body Section

The body section contains the content of a web page that is visible to the visitors. In this section, you must give a heading that contains some of the important keywords. Always try to optimize each page for one or two keywords only. The first paragraph of the body is also very important. One or two of the main keywords should be there in the first sentence of the first paragraph of the content.

Fonts can also be used in the heading. For example, the headlines can be highlighted in bold and underlined. Search engine spiders consider bold text to be an important part of the content.

Never use the keywords excessively in the content. Give the important keywords maximum importance. They should appear one to two times per each hundred words, and in the first and last paragraphs too. Synonyms and words that are related to the keywords can also be used.

Page Design

The webpage should be designed in such a way that the body text is visible to the spiders at first and then the links. A logical linking strategy should be used guiding spiders to crawl webpages in the order that you want.

2. Off-page optimisation

Off-page optimisation mainly includes link building strategies such as:

article distribution

press release submission

directory listings

one-way linking

multiway linking

three-way linking

Internet marketing

link exchanges

blogging

link campaigns (involves asking other complementary businesses to link back to your website)

social networking

forum posting

These are some of the techniques, following which you can get your website a higher ranking in the SERPs.

I am looking for a SEO software package that can be used to create reports about websites and what can be done to improve them. We would like to reduce the time it takes to create these reports for clients by hand as we do today. I was looking at WebPosition (which does a decent job creating reports about sites) and just found out about Web CEO (which appears to be a bit better) recently. Is Web CEO good at creating reports about sites? Are there other packages out there that are better?
